Wisdom 102

Quick exercise!

If you were to take a visit to your high school and one of your older teachers invited you to speak to the class about what they should do to prepare for college, what would you tell them? While the details of that speech will vary from person to person, you will probably consider all of the lessons you had to learn in order to adjust to your new environment and a greater challenge. Your heart would sincerely want them to gain wisdom from you.

This is hindsight, a clear vision for what should have been done and what others should do. Your message has merit because it is informed by experience, and you gained wisdom. However, the students who heard your speech may decide to take that wisdom and make it their own, avoiding common pitfalls. Or, they can ignore it and learn for themselves.

Now put yourself in their shoes today. What advice do you need to take? Proverbs 2:1-3 says,

1My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

This father is really stressing the need for wisdom. Imagine if you avoid all of the pitfalls you see people older than you experiencing. You may not avoid all of them, but you can surely take care to seek to be wise and learn from other’s mistakes and successes. But you have to really desire, seek, and cry out for it. It is true that your wisdom will start with your relationship with God and your obedience to Him.

So take today and everyday as an opportunity to seek wisdom!

Prayer:

Lord please help me to gain a heart of wisdom, so that I can avoid the pitfalls that would derail my life. Jesus, please draw me closer to grow in Your wisdom. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
